Angels’ Share by Kilian Hennessy pays tribute to his heritage, as heir to the renowned French cognac-making family, and to his choice olfactory intoxicants for driving the night towards dawn. A first-time collaboration with French perfumer Benoit Lapouza, the perfume Angel’s Share is Kilian Hennessy’s most personal fragrance creation yet, inspired by his eighth-generation inheritance of Hennessy savoir-faire in cognac making. The perfume goes deep into the cellars of founder’s mind and memory, and into its most mysterious dimension: “la part des anges” or “angels’ share”— an evaporation of liquor in oak barrels that lifts, while ageing, like a silent offering to the gods.

The Perfume: Much like a Master Perfumer who crafts accords and essences in a perfume, a Master Blender combines the ‘eaux-de-vie’ in perfect proportions for an exceptional cognac. Angels’ Share contains the essence of Cognac derived from the liquor to lend it a natural caramel colour. Opening with cognac oil, upon a blend of oak absolute, cinnamon essence and Tonka bean absolute, the scent’s long-lasting notes of sandalwood, praline and vanilla make for a delicious finish, a rare concoction only angels should experience.

Back to Black is a tobacco scent with sweet undertones of Honey. The freshness of the Bergamot of Calabria contrasted by the heat of the spices – Cardamom of Guatemala and Coriander berry of Europe – creates an elegant yet unusual opening. The heart is composed with Honey from Laos, Oliban from Somalia, Cedar from the Atlas and Vetiver from Haïti. A few notes of Oak Moss and Patchouli from Indonesia coat this woody marquetry. Roses on Ice is part of a brand new collection, Kilian Hennessy felt it was time to pay tribute to his heritage, as heir to the renowned French cognac making family, and to his choice olfactory intoxicants for driving the night towards dawn. As a first-time collaboration with perfumer Franck Voelkl, Kilian Hennessy wanted to recreate the tasting of “gin on the rocks” with a splash of lime, recalling his wife’s favourite drink.

When I launched my brand in 2007, my goal was to put perfumery back on its pedestal and return it to its former glory, the way perfumery existed in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Heir to a long line of cognac makers who were pioneers in luxury, Kilian decided to take up the torch of family tradition. Creating a new luxury brand was definitely a challenge worthy of his predecessors.

His childhood haunts included the family cellars in Cognac. Before graduating from CELSA, he wrote a thesis on the semantics of scent, in search of a ‘language’ common to gods and mortals. Remembering the “angels’ share” as part of his heritage, he was led into the world of perfumery. The “angels’ share” is what the House of Hennessy calls the percentage that – inexplicably – evaporates from cognac cellars, like an offering to the gods. In 2007, Kilian launched his own namesake brand with the ambition of reflecting not only his distinct personality, but also to achieve a perfect alliance between elegance and uncompromising luxury. His “eco-luxe” philosophy that each bottle can be refilled and kept for a lifetime catapulted the brand to the top of the fragrance market and into a niche of its very own.

The notes conjure, in scent, the delicate gold leafing and play between light and shadow, for which the painting is celebrated. Perfumer Calice Becker was inspired by the fascinating contrast between the painting’s facets, which she describes as ‘texturised and brilliant, rich and voluptuous’. Its zesty luminosity is the fragrant expression of this brightness. The petal-y rose heart depicts all of the facets of the rose. Finally, vanilla absolute’s unctuosity appears generously in the dry down, adorned by an exclusive patchouli molecule, the Akigalawood.
